London-Edinburgh-London: route metrics

In between being violently unwell, I spent today getting to grips with the route for LEL by converting the routesheets into a massively overcomplicated spreadsheet. Working off an average of 20kph moving speed, this gives the following headline facts:

  • 1451 kilometres cycled
  • 11,940 metres climbed (and descended, thankfully!)
  • 73 hours on the bike
  • 38 hours not on the bike
  • Currently aiming to finish with just over ten hours in hand, at 20:42 on Thursday 1st August

I’m hoping we can push the Morpheus to an average above 20kph, but that allows time for any mechanicals or p*nct*res we’re unfortunate enough to pick up.

The multicoloured Sheet Of Dreams in all its glory! The eagle-eyed will spot that I've averaged the climb between Edinburgh and Brampton as I haven't got route to splitting up the route on RideWithGPS yet.

The campaign starts in earnest!

I find that on long (i.e. 1,000km+) rides keeping to 30 mins at a controls as the ride progresses becomes harder and harder. Allowing only 15 mins at Eskdalemuir & Traquair is overly optimistic.

And how do you get the cells in the spreadsheet to fill up in such a cool way?!

Excel ’07 onwards, conditional formatting, bars. Works really well for this kind of stuff (and financial budgets, as it happens…)

Thanks for the guidance. We’re hoping to push ourselves a bit over 20kph, so the bonus time we’d be able to use to pad out the control time a bit. That being said, we really want to fly past those two controls and get that whole leg out of the way, so might as well be optimistic now!

Rob, I don’t see a column for “cake consumption for energy”! How are you going to calculate cake calorific consumption over the course of the Monsta-effort? I trust you are establishing appropriate luggage for carrying of the emergency cake?

All the best, will be tracking you with interest. :)
